Final Cut Pro Tip #002 – Shift Drag

For some reason I had missed this trick for years. I am a big fan of snapping (n) in the timeline, I like to keep my edits very neat. And even though I had snapping on I would often have trouble making clips move up or down a track in the timeline. I wanted to keep the clip starting at the same point, but wanted to change the track that is was on. Most of the time I would find that the snapping would cause the clip to change it’s point in the timeline. Now FCP is smart and it will tell you how much you moved the clip, but that was not what I was looking for.

The solution is to hold shift while you drag your clip up or down between tacks and it will remain and the same position in the timeline. Don’t know how I missed that one, but I used it daily now.
